Queen Mary is forced to abdicate
Mary, then aged 24, was forced to abdicate in favour of her 13-month-old son, James VI, having married James Hepburn, the 4th Earl of Bothwell. Hepburn had been implicated in the murder of Mary’s previous (second) husband, Henry, Lord Darnley. As James was too young to rule in his own right, his power lay in the hands of a series of regents.
