Foundation stone of the Scott Monument is laid

The Scott Monument took exactly six years – to the day – to complete. The foundation stone of the Gothic tribute to writer Sir Walter Scott was laid on 15 August 1840, and it was declared finished on 15 August 1846. Sadly, its designer, George Meikle Kemp, didn’t live to see it, as he fell into a canal and drowned during construction.
