The Tay Road Bridge opens to traffic

The 2.25km Tay Road Bridge, linking Dundee and Newport-on-Tay, was designed by William Fairhurst and carries the A92 across the Firth of Tay. Although initially a toll bridge, tolls were scrapped in early 2008, at the same time as on all other bridges in Scotland. It was officially opened by the Queen Mother on 18 August 1966, after three and a half years of construction.

A separate crossing, also called the Tay Bridge, is renowned for having collapsed in a violent storm in 1879 as a train was passing over it, resulting in more than 70 deaths.
