First scheduled flights at Barra Airport
Barra Airport, at which aircraft use three runways marked out on the beach in Traigh Mhor bay, links the island to Glasgow. The markers are a wooden pole at either end of each landing strip. The beach, at the northern tip of Barra, is tidal, and planes are unable to take off or land when the tide is in as the runways are submerged.
Although the Air Ministry granted Barra its licence on 7 August 1936, flights had already been operating since the previous month.
