Cordial inventor Lauchlan Rose dies

Lauchlan Rose invented a process for preserving lime juice, so it could be taken to sea on long voyages and consumed by sailors, to reduce their risk of developing scurvy. To ensure he had a ready supply of limes, he purchased lime groves in Africa and the West Indies. Rose died on 23 August 1857, aged 81.
